The Spanish government´s 5G National Plan will place Spain among the most advanced countries in developing 5G. This generates business opportunities for Finnish hi-tech companies.
The Secretary of State for the Information Society and the Digital Agenda, which works under the Spanish government’s Ministry of Economy and Business, commenced the first auction of licenses for 5G in July 2018. Spain’s four major operators have submitted their bids: Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange and MásMóvil.

The Spanish government´s 5G National Plan will place Spain among the most advanced countries in developing 5G. The National Plan will identify the opportunities arising from 5G in order to drive early adoption and experimentation of services over its 5G networks. This will to drive R&D, innovation and entrepreneurship in the following sectors: Automotive, Defense, Health, Energy and Utilities, Financial Services, Manufacturing, Media & Entertainment, Security, Tourism, Transportation.

Key drivers will be IoT and Smart Cities. For example, Telefónica intends to convert the cities of Segovia and Talavera de la Reina into 5G living laboratories over the next three years. Telefónica´s 5G Technological Cities project will pioneer 5G services in Spain in partnership with Nokia and Ericsson.

The 5G investment in Spain will drive the need for the following Finnish solution providers:

  • 5G Engineering
  • AI
  • AR/VR
  • Big Data
  • Communications & connectivity solutions
  • Cybersecurity
